Number of Syrian refugees increases
The Jordanese government decided on Sunday 29. July that all new Syrian refugees will be placed in refugee camps, because the cities are getting overcrowded.
Dorcas provides relief aid to Syrian refugees who leave their homes due to the unrest and fighting in the country. Many refugees end up in Jordan.
So far Dorcas focuses its assistance on refugees who arrive in the city Mafraq (Jordan) and who have not received any assistance. Besides that, Dorcas considers together with the partner organization the possibilities to provide aid in the refugee camps.
Growing numbers of refugees
Newly arriving Syrian refugees lived in existing houses until last week, often with multiple families in one house. The (partly) empty houses have become scare the last weeks, because of the increasing number of refugees. Daily 1,000-2,000 Syrian refugees arrive in the country, according to Jawdeh, the Jordan minister of foreign affairs.
Dorcas' partner organization prepares purchase of additional goods and expansion of their activities. Dorcas provides refugees, who often have left their homes with nothing else than the clothes they wear, with basic needs such sleeping gear (mattresses and blankets) and cooking utensils (stove and gas bottle). There is collaboration with another local partner organization that distributes food.
Relief aid in Syria
Dorcas' contact in Syria said on Tuesday 31. July, that daily around 1,000 new refugees arrive in the city. They are housed in homes, schools and institutes. Dorcas' partner organization has obtained permission from the Red Crescent to help people in two places where in total 1,600 people are located. Dorcas helps amongst others with provision of food, blankets, mattresses, milk and diapers.
